1950: Rugby great John Bevan was born. He played union for Cardiff, Wales and the Lions and then league for Wales and Great Britain.
1975: Georges Carpentier died, aged 81. One of boxing's most versatile champions, having by the age of 19 held European titles at welterweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight. Carpentier became world light-heavyweight champion between 1920 and 1922.
1999: Patrick Vieira was handed a four-match ban and £30,000 fine for spitting at West Ham's Neil Ruddock and a two-match ban and £15,000 fine for his confrontation with a police officer after being sent off at Upton Park.
