Vital child help message gets across

SEXUALLY abused children in the North-west are seeking help far earlier today than when Childline was launched 16 years ago.

Nearly half of the children who call the advice service now do so within a month of the abuse starting. When Childline was set up in 1986, nearly a third of callers had suffered silently for more than five years.

Carole Easton, the charity's chief executive, said: "These figures not only highlight the vital role played by Childline, but also the fact that children are increasingly aware that they do not have to tolerate it."

Childline has helped thousands of children since it was set up. It has also played a major part in changing public awareness about sexual abuse.

Mrs Easton said: "Children being sexually abused now know that someone cares enough to listen, that Childline can be their lifeline."
