Residents do not want them
WITH reference to the recent letter of October 24 from John Evans of Bolton Highways Department, I drive a private hire vehicle in the Breightmet area on a regular basis and, following feedback from customers, can assure Mr Evans that most residents do not want road humps.
Many times have I noticed Bolton's ageing double-deckers struggle over the humps on Deepdale Road, crawling at walking pace to avoid falling apart.
On two occasions, when fully loaded with our larger customers, I have experienced my car scraping over the humps at 5mph. This is a modern car, not like the Ford Capri belonging to Eddie Dicker, and has just passed the council's stringent six-monthly test. If Mr Evans doubts this story, I will gladly give him further details.
The speed humps were intended to stop excessive speeds through housing estates like those in Breightmet and Little Lever. However, they do not stop car thieves and boy racers who delight in taking the humps at excessive speeds.
Regarding the comments by Mr Evans on the council's record with the Green Lane bridge strengthening, it took the council 12 months to decide with Railtrack who was to pay for the repairs. After all this, the council then sent a questionnaire to local residents asking their views on the subject without giving them any facts.
This bridge is on a through route to a major hospital where some of the journeys are emergencies and could save a person's life.
