A NEW entrance will not be built at a busy primary school despite demands by residents.

People from Belmont View, in Harwood, had campaigned for a new entrance to be created at Hardy Mill Primary School because they were so frustrated that their driveways were constantly being blocked by parents dropping off their children.

When the ward councillors carried out a survey of 100 people living near the school, 98 of them voted in favour of a new entrance and a lay-by being built on Hardy Mill Road.

However, some parents had argued that the new entrance would create dangers on a busy road. They also said they did not block residents' driveways because the school sends out regular reminders about traffic safety.

Council officers and traffic police visited the school to assess the merits of installing a new entrance and decided against it.

But ward councillors are still keen for something to be done to improve road safety and want a car turning circle, similar to the one at Canon Slade School, to be installed in the school grounds.

Cllr Paul Brierley said: "The kids at the school could have come up with a more imaginative idea than the council officers.

"The residents' concerns need to be addressed and the safety of children is paramount. The traffic in Belmont View can be horrendous and I will be contacting the relevant council departments to make sure something is done."

A spokesman for the council said: "We have been looking at plans to move the entrance, but following advice from the police and our own highways department about the dangers involved in creating a new drop off point on a main road, we are unlikely to proceed.

"Concerns were expressed about possible dangers in dropping children off on the other side of the road or motorists doing U-turns.

"The council will now be looking at alternative traffic measures for that area."
