ARTIST Suki Chan ends her two years in residence at Leigh's Turnpike Gallery with a new exhibition.

"Little Rituals", a culmination of her work, will be on show from November 23 to January 18.

The display will form an interactive installation of moving fabrics and shadows, projected digital images and sounds.

It has three elements -- A Midsummer's Daydream an Alzheimer's Silence, Daydreams in Flight and Princess Yin and the Lady of Atropos.

It employs a range of materials including dyed rice, sewn boats made out of Indian, Malay, Chinese and English newspapers, seed pods and paper butterflies.

Hong Kong-born Suki who was brought up in England came to Leigh in January 2001. Her work has been inspired by her travels and experience of different cultures.

The first element was based on a recent residency trip to Singapore when she was intrigued by the government's strict policies towards achieving racial harmony. She researched and interacted with the multi-cultural communities investigating historical events such as the racial riots and Japanese occupation.

Wallpaper

Daydreams in Flight is an interactive installation commissioned by the Crafts Council and inspired by Victorian wallpaper.

The Princess Jin section explores issues surrounding cultural identity and was recently presented at The Bluecoats Arts Centre as part of Liverpool Biennial 2002.

Her biggest project in her first year involved a talking work "Mondays Was Washdays" which saw her tape recollections of pensioners' lives as they used to be and gathering memorabilia -- washboards, billy cans, wringers and tram tickets etc for an exhibition -- then using the objects to design a wallpaper.
