I REMEMBER that when I was young, in Adlington, my grandfather used to go to the local hairdresser for a shave in the morning (with the old cut-throat blade, of course).
No doubt many people in Bolton went to this hairdresser at 6, Hotel Street, for the same purpose.
As well as being a "Ladies' and Gents' Hairdresser", though, J. Thirkell advertised himself as a "Wig Maker and Ornamental Hair Manufacturer. Fringe Nets and Fancy Combs."
His telephone number was 140X4 (whatever that meant!).
He also used to advertise at 2s (10p) a bottle, Piloline "to make your hair grow". I could do with a few dozen bottles of that myself . . .
