LUNCHTIME TV racing comes to Haydock Park for the first time on Thursday as part of Channel 4's new weekday programme.

The half-hour show focuses on a single race - at 12.45pm - with additional betting opportunities.

The initiative is for new fans of horse racing, using a programme format aimed at people who might otherwise be put off by the apparent complexities of the sport.

The TV race is part of a fund-raiser for the Racing Welfare charity.

Local companies and sporting organisations, including Aintree Racecourse and Manchester United, are supporting the race day.

Racing Welfare provides funds for the unsung heroes, like stable staff, who form the backbone of the industry.

The race to be broadcast from Haydock is a handicap hurdle sponsored by Manchester chartered accountants Begbies Traynor, one of the supporters of Racing Welfare.

Other sponsors behind the charity drive are North West homebuilders Merewood, Wigan-based bookmakers The Tote, the European Breeders Fund, and Europe's largest family-owned stud farm Rathbarry Stud.

The first race is at 12.45pm.

Admission to the Newton Enclosure is £5, Tattersalls £11, County Enclosure £18, and Premier Enclosure on the top floor of the Centenary Grandstand £30.

Accompanied children under 16 enter free.

Senior citizens and students, with appropriate identification, enter Tattersalls and the Newton Enclosure at half price.

Advance tickets for all race meetings at Haydock are available by calling 01942 402624.
