At this time of year, they turn up smartly dressed at Morrisons or Asda to sell poppies with the discipline of the services still evident.

They may be older, certainly wiser, but they are a wonderful reminder of the intrinsic bravery of ordinary people. And of putting loyalty and the welfare of others before self.
