BOLTON Harriers senior men travelled to Sutton Park for the National six-stage relays, and after their fine showing in the Northern event hopes were high.
There was an early setback with Matt Lockett, Mick Hill and Tony Duffy all forced to drop out, but their replacements were to more than justify their selection.
Running first was Andy Parker, who was slightly disappointed with his time of 17.47 in ninth place, but Tom Lancashire moved the team up two places with 17.54.
Ian Bowles ran a solid third leg (18.35) for 10th spot.
Then the three athletes who stepped in at short notice all produced excellent performances with Anthony Hatchard (19.32) in 18th, Ian Selby (19.31) in 23rd and Pete Edmondson pulling back a place for 22nd in 19.20.
Finishing in 22nd position represents the club's best performance in the National for many years.
