WIMBLEDON have nobody to blame but themselves for turning their stadium into a ghost town. Just 400 of their fans turned up for their Worthington Cup tie against Rotherham which attracted a pitiful crowd of 664 on Tuesday night.
This in the wake of a total attendance of less than 900 for a First Division game against the same opposition a fortnight ago.
How can this be when the club had regular attendance of 6,000 last season? Because the club committed the cardinal sin of picking a fight with the fans.
Fans always get their way when they make up their minds that things have got to change. Fans sack managers and change chairmen and on this occasion they will eventually get the Wimbledon football club that they want, whether it be the old one which went up from non-league to the Premiership and won the FA Cup in 1987 or the new one which has been set up at the bottom of the non-league ladder and has attracted almost all the old club's fans.
Wimbledon think all their troubles will be solved when when move to Milton Keynes in a few months time. I suspect the reality will be quite the opposite and crowds of under 2,000 will be the norm while the new Wimbledon in South London will rise to far greater glories back where the club belongs.
