Where? Right next to the BBC building in Oxford Road in Manchester, close to the student district and a stone's throw from the train station.

What? The original Kro Bar is a little further down the road, opposite Manchester University. Both are Danish owned and retain those influences, focusing on quality beer and food in a warm atmosphere. While the first Kro is an old, tall building with a quirky character, Kro 2 is much more stylish, with glass walls, leather couches and a sleek restaurant area.

In Crowd? Obviously Kro attracts students, but, situated so close to the BBC, it is also favoured by professionals and bright young things from every walk of life. This is a light, bright bar which sums up everything a modern bar should be, and which has a crowd to match.

Handbag or heavy metal? music is not the focus in Kro 2 and, as such, it is difficult to remember what, if anything, they play! Needless to say that, with a restaurant area to cater for, the music is very low key. However, they are planning to develop a late night scene so this could all change in good time!

What's The Damage? They serve huge and rather lovely glasses of wine in Kro 2, so the damage is more likely to be to your liver than to your pocket. You can get a glass for about £3, a reasonable bottle for about £9, a pint for £2.20 and a pitcher of German lager for £7.20. Not bad for such a centrally located bar.

Verdict? Kro 2 is a great bar with a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Equally appealing is the outside area which is covered by large wooden parasols containing great heaters. Though it isn't impossible to sit out at this time of year, it is a bit too nippy for comfort. But in spring and summer you could ask for nothing more than to sit in Kro 2's huge beer garden and watch the world go by.
