ETHNIC minorities are to be offered a free legal service enabling them to battle against incidents of race discrimination.

A launch of the Northern Race Discrimination Service will take place next month in Manchester.

It will be run by the Bolton Racial Equality Council (BREC), which won the contract to provide the service for three years.

BREC is also pushing for a relaunch of the Bolton Racial Harassment Project which came to an end in March when National Lottery funding ran out.

A decision on the Project is unlikely to be be taken for a few months but BREC director Zophin Makkan said talks were due to take place with the National Lottery and Bolton Council about fresh funding.

If granted, the service would be the first point of call for people who believe they have fallen victim to racial harassment.

Mrs Makkan said there was a gap which needed to be filled. "We want to relaunch the Project as quickly as possible," she added.
