POLICE have made a fresh appeal to trace a mystery man involved in a fight with another man who later died from severe head injuries.
Craig Wolfenden, aged 37, was seen arguing outside his bedsit in Bromwich Street, The Haulgh, Bolton, in the early hours of Friday. Detectives say he had earlier been drinking with a friend at a nearby flat.
A woman, who was visiting the building in which Mr Wolfenden had his bedsit, helped the mystery man put Mr Wolfenden to bed following the argument.
She says she checked on Mr Wolfenden several times during the following day and eventually called an ambulance at about 7pm after becoming concerned about him. He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital where he died.
A murder investigation was launched yesterday and police have appealed to the mystery man to contact them. He is described as aged around 22, 5ft 6in tall, with black hair and a graze on the left of his face.
Another witness has reported seeing a man of Asian appearance with a graze on the side of his face in nearby Clayton Street at around 5am on Friday morning.
Det Chief Insp Carol Ashworth said: "We still don't know how Mr Wolfenden died. We are anxious to speak to the man who was involved in an argument with him. If it happened in the way that witnesses have told us, the mystery man did not even realise the seriousness of the victim's injuries or what had happened."
"Due to the proximity of the two sightings of men near the scene, by witnesses and the descriptions, it may have been one and the same person but we do not know at this stage."
"We think this was probably a totally innocent individual who happened to be around that area at the time, I would appeal for him to contact us."
Anyone with information should call the CID on 0161 856 5740 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
