AN experimental Magpies' line-up needed to be no more than workmanlike to book a place in the second round of the Lancashire FA Marsden Trophy at the expense of their North West Counties League Division Two opponents at Victory Park last night.
Manager Mark Molyneaux rested six of his first-choice players and was rewarded by promising performances from teenage defender Ben Chatburn and reserve midfielder Stuart Tulloch in particular.
But there was no place for new keeper Lee Bracey, whose signing was not completed in time.
Castleton almost grabbed a shock lead when Andrew Entwistle's cross took a deflection and rebounded off the far post into Molyneaux's arms.
The Magpies went in front on 28 minutes when Peter Weston's free-kick from the right was swept into the net by Andy Mason with a well-timed run to the near post.
Chorley dominated play and Tulloch applied a cool finish to a fine cross from substitute Darren Emmett but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Phil Lockett made the game safe for Chorley with a scorching low drive into the corner from 30 yards.
