OVER the past couple of weeks or so I have printed quite a lot about the Relay Radio in Horwich.
I have now heard from Derek Shepherd, of Grove Street, Bolton, who tells me that the son of the owner, Arthur Hallows, had his main job at Back o'th' Bank Power Station where he was a shift charge engineer until he retired in 1960.
"I started as a staff trainee in 1947, and served under Mr Hallows (no familiarity of first names in those days!). His middle name was Redvers, and he was the first person I knew who had his initials on his car number plate ARH 101.
"He often talked about his radio network in Horwich which he managed in his off-duty time, and sometimes brought faulty items to repair in the quiet hours in the middle of a night shift."
