From the Evening News, August 16, 1992 - GENEROUS readers are helping the Bolton Evening News to train guide dog number three.
Already, with readers' help, this newspaper has collected enough used stamps to train guide dogs Ben and Star. We are now only a little short of the 645lbs needed to train another dog. You can help us by letting us have your used stamps, and help a blind person to "see" again.

VANDAL-plagued allotment holders are mounting a nightly "cabbage patrol" off Settle Street, Bolton. Last night two gardeners stood guard until the early hours to defend maturing crops from the "spud bashers". In recent weeks they have suffered the pre-harvest heartbreak of greenhouses and a committee room wrecked, potatoes and onions torn up, cabbages kicked around like footballs. There are 43 allotments on the site.

SWIMMING through a thunderstorm, 20-years-old Kathleen Mayoh, 5, Middle-st., Farnworth, crossed the English Channel yesterday at her second attempt. She waded ashore at Dover at 8.30 last night, and was the second Briton to finish. Thirteen swimmers from six countries made the attempt yesterday, and three succeeded. Kathleen achieved the feat in 16 hrs. 55 mins. The women's record is 12 hrs. 45 min. When Kathleen waded ashore, the crowd began singing "Lassie from Lancashire".

THE minds of the vast army of toilers in Bolton and district are no doubt centred on this weekend when, for a few days, they will be able to lay down the implements with which they earn their daily bread and enjoy a well earned holiday.
The weather is, however, giving rise to grave misgivings as to whether or not it will be favourable to holiday making, and certainly looking back upon the past week or two does not tend to mitigate the ominous impression.
At the mills, foundries and other industrial establishments in the town, work will cease tonight until Wednesday morning. In the case of some mills the stoppage will be extended over the whole of next week, advantage being taken of the opportunity to carry out repairs. At the shops and public offices business will be conducted as usual.
