MANCHESTER United have won back their place in Europe. The European Football Union this afternoon reinstated the club in the Cup Winners' Cup competition from which they were banned last week because of violent behaviour by some of their supporters. However, they must play their first-round second-leg tie against French side St Etienne in a stadium 120 miles from Manchester. They must inform UEFA of the venue by 6pm on Thursday, or they will be considered to have lost the second leg 3-0. The club was also fined £7,500.

"WE ask our men to take two years out of their lives to do national service. Is it asking too much of the women of this country to find time to do national hospital reserve training?" asked Miss M. P. Hornsby-Smith, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health, at a crowded public meeting in the Co-operative Hall yesterday. The target for this country is 100,000 members, or two to every thousand of population. With this ratio, the target for Bolton and district would be about 334, but so far only 87 people have joined the service. She spoke of the usefulness of this nursing training in the home and in the factories, as well as in time of war.

MR Robert Harwood, a director of the firm and head of the millwright department, has been connected with the Soho works of Messrs Hick, Hargreaves and Co., for 50 years. At noon on Saturday, a presentation of silver plate subscribed for by the whole of the employees, was made to him in commemoration of the event.
The ceremony took place in the spacious yard at the works, an improvised platform being erected on which, with those taking part in the ceremony, was placed the silver plate, which consisted of a spirit kettle and stand. The articles are excellent specimens of the silversmith's art and were much admired.
