From the Evening News, July 3, 1992 - OFFICIAL wheels are in motion to enforce a ban on cyclists in Bolton's pedestrian precincts.
Councillors and police are preparing a joint clamp down after a mass of complaints from shoppers. Soon, cyclists who ignore the ban will face prosecution. Town centre shoppers have complained to police and politicians about being harassed by bike riders within the pedestrian zones.

A COUNCIL chief has promised action after a 30-minute tour of "rubble-strewn" Breightmet organised by an irate council tenant. Counc. John Hanscomb, leader of Bolton Council, said: "I will be discussing the problem with the chief executive officer and officers responsible for street cleansing." SIR, - As a parent with a child of 15, as a taxpayer, and also as a business man of over 30 years' experience. I claim that an extra year at school over the age of 14 is a sheer waste of time, money and outlook.
What are the children being taught? - Nothing. Is there a curriculum? - No. Have we staff and schools to waste? - No. After this wonderful investment, do we get better juniors in industry? - No.
What are we to do about it? It must be understood that for every child admitted to a grammar school, six are usually being given 12 months' rest at the public expense. Yours, Rastus.

A NEW horse ambulance, purchased out of funds raised by Inspector Morgan of the Tyldesley Police, was presented to the Tyldesley District Council last night at an open-air gathering on the square. The carriage is similar to those in use at Atherton and Farnworth. It is handsomely constructed, and equipped with every requisite for the safe removal of the injured, one of the best features being the facilities provided for easy ingress and egress.
AMIDST great manifestations of heartfelt sympathy and regret, the remains of the late Rev. John Handel Taylor, curate of the Saviour's Church, whose death at the age of 44 took place at the Infirmary on Sunday, were laid to rest this afternoon in Deane Church-yard in the presence of a large and sorrowing assembly of relatives and friends.
