Horwich RMI Harrier Sue Jones was a class act in last Saturday's World Triathlon Age Group Championships held at Cancun, Mexico.
The Sport Science lecturer finished a superb ninth in her category (Ladies 35 to 39 years) and first Britain.
This was a fantastic achievement and all the more impressive as she competed in the extreme heat with temperatures soaring to over 45 degrees.
Many athletes collapsed and failed to finish in the most punishing of conditions, including 12 British ladies in Sue's category alone. Unfortunately fellow club mate Nigel Clementson was one athlete who collapsed, frustratingly only 1K from the finish.
With everyone reduced to a crawl on the 10K run section it took all of Sue's resolve and determination to finish, for despite taking water on board at every opportunity it seemed to have very little effect.
In the 1500m sea swim and 40K cycle she recorded superb PB's of 23.49 and 1.08.27. A delighted Sue was quick, once again, to thank her employers Bolton Community College for allowing her the time off to compete and extremely grateful to her backers including Bolton Forum For Sport and adventure21.com.
Jan Rashleigh was an excellent second (first lady vet) in the NW Women's cross country fixture at Sherdley Park, St. Helens last Sunday.
James Carter ran well to finish ninth in the seven-mile Cop Hill Fell Race, Meltham whilst Neil Wrigley was first vet in the five-mile Dunnerdale Fell Race.
