I READ that some schools of thought are suggesting that, because of the firefighters strike, persons may have died.

I find this very irresponsible and very inflammatory. It is very sad for the loss of any life, whatever the circumstances, but this is the start of the "bully boy" tactics.

The main comments being argued are about the request for a 40 per cent rise. The question that arises from this is, 40 per cent of what?

When Tony Blair and his associates came to power they gave themselves a 17 per cent pay rise across the board.

They may say only 17 per cent, but 17 per cent on a politician's salary is more than a 40 per cent rise on a firefighter's salary!

Margaret Thatcher, at one stage of her leadership, gave the police federation a massive 48 per cent rise.

The people that work hard under pressure with extreme dedication, their main criteria to save lives and property, at the same time their own well-being, is under constant danger from their vocation and, at times, from the general public they protect. They are the people that earn and deserve maximum rewards -- not the suits!

As a comparison an average social worker takes home, at the end of the week, more pay than a firefighter. This does not compare. Something is wrong.
