AS a Conservative and a Christian, I did not think I would ever disagree with the Michael Rev Williams, the respected Vicar of Bolton Church. I think this is the second time in as many weeks that he has attacked the Party, but on this occasion I do not feel he has the Lord on his side.
I cannot see that the history of "the family" in this country has a bearing on the subject of adoption. It is now accepted that homosexuals may live together and enjoy the good life and, although their lifestyles may seem odd to many, their association is no longer a crime in this country. However, when they feel, either as men or as women that they would like to adopt a child, do they consider what the subsequent effect may be on that child as he or she grows up in that environment?
Immediately one thinks of school days. While adults may understand the situation of same gender parents, I suggest that children will not. The adopted child will be a target for taunts and bullying. Why? Because they will seen to be different. Children can be cruel in these situations and I suspect that not even the Vicar of Bolton could persuade them to be otherwise.
I will not comment on post-school days as damage will have been done by then. I need hardly explain that this background does not create the same problems when adoption is by a single parent. This is accepted by children as "normal". Yes, I can understand the maternal wishes of two ladies wanting to adopt a child; it is a natural feeling. But the future well-being of the child must have priority. Sorry Vicar. On this occasion I think my party's view is correct.
