This picture has come all the way from Argentina, sent by Mr Luis Stuart- Pennington. He writes: "It is a portrait of two ladies, Mary and Ellen Ferguson, nee Stuart.
The latter was the wife of Fergus Ferguson, Mayor of Bolton. I am not certain when this image was taken, probably about the 1860s, but it has been in the family for generations." Well, Mr Stuart-Pennington is probably right with his dates; Fergus Ferguson was an Alderman of Bolton between 1856 and 1874, and mayor of the town in 1866-67.
I have e-mailed Mr Stuart- Pennington to ask what relation, if any, he is to the two ladies, and the history of his family as far as Bolton is concerned. Unfortunately, I have not heard back from him, so I decided to print the photograph anyway!
