WHEN I first saw this photograph, I thought the women looked so serious that perhaps they were at a funeral!
But no, says Mrs Daphne Tillotson, of Westcombe, Victoria Road, Bolton, who lent it to me, they were committee members and supporters of the Bolton Recreation Club (later the Girls' Club which later still joined with Bolton Lads' Club) in the 1930s, but she does not know the event.
The president, third from left on the second row from front, was Mrs Janet Entwisle, the grandmother of Mrs Tillotson's husband Marcus (the Evening News was founded, of course, by the Tillotson family in 1867, and remained in the family until 1971, with Marcus being the last family chairman of the company).
In the centre of the back row was Mary Tillotson, Marcus's sister, and next to her, second from right on the back row, Rachael Ryder, who married Frank Singleton, editor of the Evening News from 1945 until 1965.
