A SCHOOLBOY'S community spirit has earned him a community award in memory of the Princess of Wales.
John Culshaw, a Year 11 pupil at Harper Green School, Farnworth, has been chosen for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award, which annually recognises outstanding contributions made by pupils to their schools and local communities.
John, aged 15, was chosen because he has used his first aid skills in the community after training with the Army Cadets for three years.
Despite having to use his first aid skills on many occasions, John insists he is no hero. He said: "I don't want any thanks or reward, I am just happy to help."
But staff at Harper Green School think he fully deserves his award. Carol McDonald, Head of Year 11 said: "We are very proud of John. He has acted in a very mature and responsible manner in some very difficult circumstances and he deserves this recognition." John follows Deane School pupils Thomas Sweet and Sheetal Patel, who were given the award in 2001 for their fund raising activities after the September 11 attack on New York.
