SOLDIERS based in Bolton's twin town of Paderborn in Germany tackled a blaze in Farnworth while providing the town with temporary fire cover.
More than 60 soldiers have moved into Bolton's Territorial Army centre while the nation's firefighters take to the picket lines.
The first call they answered was at 10.30am on Friday when they dealt with an Astra Estate which had been saet alight on Smithfield Way, Farnworth.
It was the first time the Army soldiers had tackled a car fire but they had put the blaze out within 10 minutes. Shortly afterwards they put out a Nissan Micra that had been set on fire in Woodgate Street, Great Lever. At 2.30 pm they were called to a house in Hillfield Walk, Tonge Moor, to put out a small fire in a toaster.
There were no casualties, but an elderly man was treated for shock.
The soldiers were also called out a further three times overnight to false alarms in Tonge Moor, Farnworth and Bolton town centre.
