DUNCAN Fletcher is backing Nasser Hussain to overcome the first crisis of confidence in his captaincy and leadership and guide England through the remainder of the Ashes tour, the World Cup and beyond.

Hussain has enjoyed nothing but plaudits since taking over the captaincy from Alec Stewart in 1999, particularly after his partnership with coach Fletcher helped England to four successive series wins two years ago over Zimbabwe, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

But after England slumped to an innings and 51 run defeat in the second Test against Australia on Sunday, remaining on course for an Ashes whitewash, the first signs of criticism began to emerge.

Former Australian seamer Merv Hughes suggested Hussain should be replaced for Friday's third Test in Perth, where England must avoid defeat to prevent Australia claiming their seventh successive Ashes series triumph.

Hughes claims Hussain had "fired all his shots and is firing blanks," while there has been further speculation that England's captain could resign if Australia do retain the Ashes at the WACA early next week.

Fletcher, though, believes a resignation would be totally out of character for his captain and is confident Hussain still has the drive and determination to lead England through their gruelling winter programme.
