PAUL Warhurst returned after 10 weeks on the sidelines as Sam Allardyce tackled a defensive crisis that had already denied him the services of the suspended Bruno N'Gotty and the injured duo of Mike Whitlow and Gudni Bergsson before Bernard Mendy broke his leg on U21 duty with France.

Ricardo Gardner came through unscathed after featuring in Jamaica's scoreless draw in Nigeria in midweek and returned to the starting line-up after missing the 4-2 win at Leeds through suspension.

Nicky Southall was handed a place on the subs' bench after being recalled from his loan spell at Norwich.

Chelsea skipper Marcel Desailly was given the all-clear after checks on the knee injury he picked up in France's 3-0 friendly victory over Yugoslavia, allowing manager Claudio Ranieri to name a side that showed just one change to the side that beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at Stamford Bridge - Jesper Gronkjaer preferred to Jody Morris in the starting line-up and former Reebok favourite, Eidur Gudjohnsen, retaining his place alongside top scorer Gianfranco Zola.

JAY JAY Okocha and Youri Djorkaeff inspired a Wanderers' fightback after high-flying Chelsea ran the first quarter of this afternoon's Premiership clash at the Reebok.

Jussi Jaaskelainen made two crucial saves in as many minutes - first from William Gallas then Eidur Gudjohnsen - to prevent the Londoners turning their dominance into goals. But Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini - almost redundant in the first 25 minutes - twice had to stretch to deny Wanderers the lead.

The Italian kept out Per Frandsen's cross-shot then did even better to palm away a powerful right-footer from Djorkaeff as Wanderers got the upper hand.

17:02: BOLTON WANDERERS 1, CHELSEA 1.

JIMMY-Floyd Hasselbaink snatched a last-gasp equaliser for 10-man Chelsea to deny Wanderers two precious Premiership points.

The Dutchman, a half-time substitute for Jesper Gronkjaer, found the net with a glancing header from Gianfranco Zola's cross in the 89th minute, just when Henrik Pedersen's 63rd minute header appeared to have set up a second home win of the season for Sam Allardyce's men.

Chelsea were down to 10 men for the last 14 minutes after Celestine Babayaro was sent off for a challenge on Youri Djorkaeff but they kept plugging away, finishing the game strongly - just as they had started it.

In between, Wanderers belied their lowly league placing and would have been good value for the win.

Pedersen scored his third goal in seven days - the first Chelsea had conceded in six top flight fixtures - to give them a just reward for some enterprising play, so often denied by Italian keeper Carlo Cudicini.
