A MURDER investigation was under way today after a man from Radcliffe died after suffering serious head injuries in a "sustained and prolonged" street attack outside a restaurant.
The 40-year-old victim was attacked by another man as he walked out of the Saigon Restaurant in Lower Broughton Road, Pendleton, at 11.30pm on Friday.
The victim, whose identity had not been revealed, was taken to Salford's Hope Hospital, but died yesterday without gaining consciousness.
This afternoon detectives appealed for witnesses to come forward. It is thought the man and a friend aged 23, from the Pendleton area, became involved in a dispute with another man inside the restaurant.
They were both attacked as they walked out of the door.
The 23-year-old was also taken to Salford's Hope Hospital and was detained over the weekend, but is thought to have been less seriously injured. Police say his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
Chief Supt Kevin Duffy, leading the murder hunt, said today: "This was a serious and prolonged attack which left one man with serious head injuries and another in hospital. I believe a number of people must have seen what has happened.
"I would urge anyone with information to contact us."
Detectives are keen to talk to a white man in his 20s. He has dark hair and a stocky build. He was wearing dark jeans and a patterned shirt.
Anyone with information should contact detectives on 0161 856 5153 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
