MANCHESTER Airport was put on full emergency alert early today when the pilot of a jumbo jet with 370 passengers on board radioed to say he was short on fuel, and was having problems with the aircraft's flaps, after being diverted from Heathrow because of fog.

The aircraft landed safely just before 6am with the emergency services standing by.

The first and business class passengers were taken off the aircraft and were expected to be flown to London.
