I REFER to the article in which council spokesmen seem to think they have done an excellent job by introducing instant fines for dog fouling in public places.

This is just another excuse for thinking they have done something positive. I cannot see how this can work to stop the thoughtless dog-owners from committing this offence. There are many dog-walkers who carry plastic bags for removal of the fouling and they are to be commended. It is always the minority who spoil it for the rest of us.

How are we going to catch these people? There are not enough dog wardens to be everywhere and at all hours! Most of the offences are committed late at night when a dog is sent out or taken out for that purpose before bedtime. Can we be sure the offending person will give the correct name and address?

Do we expect the police to take on another duty? I think not. I myself have approached offenders, only to be met with abuse! Come on, councillors, grasp the nettle, stop pussyfooting about and make a positive move.
