REGARDING the firefighters' strike over pay. I can sum it up in one word -- greed.
Forty per cent is way over the top.
On Thursday, November 14, fireman Howard Denton said in the Bolton Evening News he earned £21,300 a year, which, if my maths are correct amounts to £409 per week. He reckons he cannot manage on this, so he also does a driving job.
However, let's face it, there are folk on less, far less, who have to manage.
I am a pensioner on £7228 a year, which gives me £139 per week after tax. Oh yes, I have tax taken from my state and work's pension. In all my working life I never earned £409 per week.
Now the firemen are after £30,000 a year -- or £577 per week. It's greed. Nothing more, nothing less, and if they get this, I can truly say this country is barmy.
