A MAN has vowed to steer clear of drugs by starting a new life in Bolton -- so he can see his baby grand-daughter growing up, a court was told.

Ronald Carr moved to the town from Scotland after he was charged with possessing 13 wraps of heroin.

And after escaping a jail term, the 37-year-old told Glasgow Sheriff Court: "I'm clean and I plan to stay that way."

The court heard that Carr was stopped by police officers in Easterhouse area of Glasgow. Officers searched him believing he was holding drugs.

Carr admitted he had a £10 bag of heroin on him, but on closer inspection, more bags were discovered.

The court heard 13 packages were eventually found, some of which Carr had hidden in his mouth.

The contents of the bags were tested and it was confirmed all held deadly heroin valued at around £200.

John Brown, defending, said that, prior to the arrest, Carr had a long-standing addiction with heroin. But, after being charged, he made a frank admission he wanted off drugs forever.

The addict wanted a new life to make sure he was around to see his grandchild.

The lawyer added: "He decided, on his own accord, he had to get off drugs and away from the scene he was in. He had been part of it for a while and decided he wanted no more of it. His inspiration was his daughter was expecting a baby and he realised the only way to be there to see her was to rid his addiction." The court heard Carr left Glasgow to begin his battle and set up home in Halliwell Road, Bolton.

He told the court he was now off drugs and enjoying life again in Bolton.

Sheriff Brian Lockhart placed him on a year's probation and a drugs counselling programme.

He said: "I am aware you are not on drugs any more, but this programme will make sure this remains the case."

"You have been placed on probation on the premise you remain on the track you are on."
