BOXING Day 2002 marks the 40th anniversary of the annual winter 'test match' between Brooksbottoms Cricket Club and Bolton Road, now renamed Elton Vale.
To mark the event a Sportsman's Dinner has been arranged at the new Elton Vale Sports Club on Friday, December 13, commencing 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £12.50 each.
Guest speaker for the night is former Lancashire CC captain John Abrahams with TV comedian Steve Rowe in support.
Previous dinners to commemorate milestones in the traditional contest have seen such notable speakers as Lancashire legends Brian Statham, Paul Allott, Jack Simmons and Jack Bond.
Elton Vale president John Law, who took part in the first 30 years fixtures commented: "We have always encouraged the ladies to attend these special dinners.
"After all it creates a warm Christmas atmosphere as well as easing the way for the cricketers to indulge in their Boxing Day match!"
The committee of both clubs invite former players, members, umpires or just cricket lovers to attend this unique occasion and further details may be obtained by contacting officials of either club, Bolton Road's John Ford (0161-764 4407) or Brooksbottoms secretary Dave Brown (0161-764 8358).
The 40th Boxing Day match of the series will take place for the first time at Elton Vale, whatever the weather with the start fixed as tradition demands at 11am.
