D J HOWARTH (Bolton Evening News, November 13) slams the Rev Michael Williams, saying his "Thought for the Week", November 4, was pure illogical thought and contradiction.
He says if the Canon maintains that all religions are equally valid, then he is casting great doubt on the truth of the Bible and admitting that he is unsure of his own belief. I do not agree!
The Vicar of Bolton is a Christian, probably because he was born to a Christian family. Had he been born to a Jewish or a Muslim family, then most likely he would now be a Jew or a Muslim. Creed is such an accident of birth.
Mr Howarth says if the Canon believes the gospels, then it isn't possible for him to believe that other religions can be true.
But Mr Howarth misses the point. The Rev Williams, I am sure, is not saying he believes other religions to be true, he is simply saying he respects others' belief that their particular creed is the true one.
What the world needs now is more thinking along the lines of the Vicar of Bolton. We need more religious leaders willing to accept the diversity of beliefs throughout the world. Willing to accept that God made us all, and will not forsake us for simply singing from the wrong hymn sheet.
Thankfully, here in Bolton, we do have religious leaders, from all creeds, who see this as the way forward -- God's way.
