WITH reference to the recent by-election in Daubhill.

It was considered by most people, including the Bolton Evening News, as a battle between the Labour and Conservative groups. As things turned out, the Conservatives contrived to finish third in this so-called two-horse race. And it was the Liberal Democrats that came within 90 votes of overturning a once solid Labour seat.

Increasingly, people in Bolton are turning to the Liberal Democrats to give them a real alternative to a complacent Labour group, and we are working hard to bring that much-needed change about.

Having said that, politicians from all parties must take a sober look at the level of turn-out at the by-election and local elections as a whole, and redouble their efforts to re-engage people in the political process.

Successful communities rely on people getting involved in civic life, and low turn-outs are a reflection of the apathy which can do so much damage. I would therefore appeal to all your readers who care about the future development of Bolton to get involved in their communities through their local political organisations, and help to make a difference to their town.
