SO our area planners have done it again -- recommended for approval the application to erect a five-storey complex housing over 60 car parking spaces on the former Brook Saw Mills at Bradshaw Brow.

In my opinion, this is too high and allows for twice the number of vehicles as on the former planning application to exit on to a bend of a major road. When considering a developer's proposals, "consultants" viewing the feasibility of absorbing extra cars on hazardous roads appear seldom to foresee any problems. It is after the fait accompli that the locals are left to cope.

Upgrading of the traffic signals at the Royal Oak junction will not solve the effects of the extra burden -- it is merely a palliative measure to try to keep the generated extra traffic "flowing" until the next crisis -- due to further house building -- is upon us.

Local residents going about their daily business of shopping, visiting the doctor, dentist etc, have for far too long been forced to "run the gauntlet" of unfriendly traffic light phasing at this busy crossing. If and when negotiations take place, I trust our concerns for pedestrian-protective sequences are taken on board and addressed.
