BOLTON West MP Ruth Kelly is urging shoppers intending to buy gifts online this Christmas to follow some simple steps to reduce the risk of being conned.
Despite the growing trend of internet shopping many people are still apprehensive, particularly about credit card fraud, giving out personal information and that companies might not be genuine.
Preventative measures consumers should take include using known or recommended sites, getting the supplier's phone number or address and keeping copies of emails or order forms.
In addition, the law protects you against credit card fraud.
Ruth Kelly said: "Internet shopping can prove to be safe for consumers if they take the proper precautions.
"Once shoppers are able to overcome their fears concerning the internet, they will discover the numerous benefits that can be achieved shopping online."
