Wanderers have been forced to abandon their plan to wear the new limited edition 125-year anniversary shirt in Saturday's game against Blackburn Rovers.
Wanderers were to wear the special red, white and blue vertically striped shirt after they got permission from the FA Premier League.
But yesterday they were told to abandon the plan after the referees department decided the jersey would clash with both Blackburn's home and away shirts.
A Reebok club spokesperson said: "The Premier League had approved our request initially to wear the shirt for the game against Blackburn but upon further inspection, and advice from the Referees' Department, it was felt this would not be appropriate. In light of this information we'll wear it for a different game."
Subject to approval, Wanderers say they plan to wear the shirt for the home clash against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.
Meanwhile, the limited edition replica shirts, which have now completely sold out, will be available for collection from the Club Superstore on Wednesday morning. Shirts will be posted this week to supporters who bought them via mail-order.
