Bolton Little Theatre, When We Are Married. Runs until Saturday

THIS Yorkshire comedy by JB Priestley is a classic . . . and, on this showing, with good reason.

Three couples -- the Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitts -- are set to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. All were married on the same day at Lane End Chapel in their village of Clecklewyke, and since each has become prosperous and well respected within society.

And it is against this atmosphere of celebration and just a little cosy smugness that the six come together for their special day.

But, as they prepare to tick off the new "la-di-da" church organist, nothing can prepare them for the bombshell he is about to deliver that could threaten to change their lives forever.

The performances given by the six actors within the three couples, are each wonderful. They give subtle performances that build up three-dimensional characters. The nuances of each are terrifically drawn up ensuring that as the play continues and the strain takes it toll, the audience delights in how each copes.

Ernest Dawson as the particularly pompous Cllr Albert Parker was excellent, as was Christine Pierce Jones as the formidable battle-axe Mrs Clara Soppitt.

Debbie Kelly as the maid Ruby Birtle is excellent. Sharron Knott as the cheeky housekeeper Mrs Northrop and Robin Thompson as drunk press photographer Henry Ormonroyd also had the audience roaring with laughter.

The scenery and lighting was flawless, and costumes perfect.

An excellent strong cast did this classic play more than justice.
