A COUNCIL has linked up to a pioneering new scheme to help cut costs, provide a better service and boost the local economy.

It has turned to the e-marketplace as part of an innovative procurement consortium -- only the second council-run one of its kind in the UK.

Chorley Borough Council hopes to be totally 'on line' in the next three years -- not only to allow residents to pay bills, for example, but also to buy in items, from office equipment to housing materials, using local firms.

Council leader John Wilson said: "We are part of what is only the second local authority run e-marketplace in the UK. What we achieve today will be followed by others tomorrow.

"We believe it's only by being at the cutting edge of change that we can ensure long-term benefits and improvement, at a price we can afford for our customers, the people of Chorley."
