A MAN needed more than 200 stitches to facial injuries after an attack by two drunken brothers.

The victim, Paul Fairclough, suffered severe slash wounds and will be scarred for life, Bolton Crown Court was told.

Two brothers admitted attacking Mr Fairclough after a row in a Leigh pub.

John Ward was jailed for three years for wounding with intent and James Ward received a non-custodial sentence.

The court heard there was an argument between Mr Fairclough and one of the brothers at the Collier's Rest pub in Firs Lane, Leigh.

The brother left and returned in a taxi with the other brother. They both waited outside and attacked Mr Fairclough when he left the pub.

Mr Fairclough was assaulted with a weapon and was left him with severe slash wounds to his face, nose and lips.

John Ward, aged 23, of Winward Street, Leigh, admitted wounding with intent.

James Ward , aged 31, of the same address, admitted unlawful wounding.

Judge Reginald Lockett jailed John Ward for three years and sentenced James Ward to a two-year community rehabilitation order and 100-hour community punishment order.

The court heard that both men had been brought up on caravan sites and had little education. James Ward was unable to read and write.

Both had been drinking heavily since early evening on the day of the attack, the court was told, and James Ward was unable to remember hardly anything about the incident.

John Ward claimed he had gone to help his brother out of family loyalty.
