A CHORLEY company was fined a total of £11,000 after magistrates heard how it polluted the River Yarrow, killing thousands of fish.
Fish and invertebrates were killed along a stretch of more than 3km of the Yarrow, after highly acidic waste was washed from a sink at MGH Reclaim Limited's site at the Common Bank Industrial Estate, in Ackhurst Road.
The company pleaded guilty to one offence under the Water Resources Act 1991, of causing polluting matter to enter the Yarrow, and four offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, of failing to comply with Waste Management Licence conditions.
As well as being fined, the company was ordered to pay £6,000 costs to the Environment Agency, which brought the prosecution yesterday. The costs include an amount towards restocking the river with fish.
