THE memory of disabled sportsman Mike Pyke is being kept alive by Tyldesley Rotary Club.
Almost a year after his death, a new challenge trophy has been presented in his name to the club's disabled sports committee.
Mike's widow Pauline, of Green Street, Hindsford, was at a recent meeting to see Keith Unsworth, district chairman for community service, receive the trophy, which is for disabled weightlifters.
Mike, who was 35, was born with spina bifida, but his determination and independence took him to sporting glory. He became an international weightlifting champion and, until his death last December, after a tough battle against cancer, was leader of the district Rotary district team of disabled athletes.
Fellow weightlifters will now compete for the trophy which was handed over by Tyldesley club president, John Leech. He said: "Mike was held in great esteem by Rotary and we are delighted that his family are present to witness the legacy that he has left."
