NEW ambulances will soon be on duty in Bolton.

A total of 26 ambulances are being added to the existing fleet in Greater Manchester, thanks to £2 million worth of government funding.

The vehicles will be spread throughout the service's area, including Bolton, and will replace ageing ambulances.

Greater Manchester Ambulance Service chiefs say that it is too early to say how many will come to Bolton, but say older ambulances in the town will be replaced gradually by the new vehicles.

The new ambulances include a new electrical management system, special medical units, modern warning lights, additional lifesaving equipment and improved radio communications.

Rugby Union stars Jason Robinson and Brian Redpath from the "Sharks" Rugby Union Club in Sale officially unveiled the new fleet at a ceremony this week.

Derek Cartwright, responsible for the paramedic emergency service, said: "The vehicles contain new carry chairs and the latest design of stretcher and will help us to continue to improve the quality of care and level of performance to everyone in Greater Manchester."
