VANDALS have wrecked a town centre Christmas nativity scene for the second year running.
The display outside Atherton Parish Church in Market Street was vandalised just three days after being set up by Round Table volunteers.
Vandals got through a seven-foot high wire fence, put up for safety and security purposes, and ripped off the plastic display window. They broke four of the foot-high figures, including Mary and a donkey, plus a light fitting.
For four years the display, which features 14 clay figures made by inmates at Hindley prison, has been the town's Christmas centre piece.
St John's verger Roy Battersby said: "This is the second year in a row we have been targeted. Last year two figures were stolen. We got one back, but one is still missing.
"The display will remain up for the rest of Christmas, but we can't watch it all the time. It is up to the public to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious behaviour."
Quinton Smith of Atherton and Tyldesley Round Table said: "These figures are damaged beyond repair. The damage amounts to a few hundred pounds.
"There has been a lot of time and effort put into this for the people of the town and we are disgusted with this mindless attitude. It is spoiling the enjoyment for the children."
