A LEAFY new oasis is set to get the formal go ahead from Bolton councillors. A planning application has been submitted by the Forestry Commission to transform 37 hectares of former farmland at Horrocks Hill, Smithills into a community forest for everyone to enjoy.
A range of native broad leaved trees is being planted and a new car park is being created along with footpaths to ensure easy access to the area.
Experts from the Forestry Commission hope that within five years the trees planted so far will have grown enough to create a pleasant woodland setting.
Local people have had a say in how the area should look at a series of consultations held earlier this year.
The idea for the woodland is that it should create a "green bridge" between Bolton and Smithills Country Park. Planning councillors are expected to give the scheme formal approval at a meeting early next year.
The planting of over 40,000 trees at the site is expected to be completed by Christmas. and the car park installed by the Spring.
Planning councillors are expected to give the scheme formal approval at a meeting early next year.
