FAMILIES are being urged to be extra vigilant for bogus collectors in the run-up to the festive season.

At this time of year, local charities and good causes are out and about collecting for their Christmas appeals.

However, it is also a busy time for conmen and thieves who prey on vulnerable and often elderly people.

They claim to be genuine collectors and use the season of goodwill to fill their own pockets.

Pc Louis Callaghan, crime reduction adviser for Bolton Police, urged people to call the police as soon as possible if they are suspicious about a caller at their door.

He said: "Speed is of the essence. If the caller is a bogus caller, we need to know quickly. If you have suspicions, however small, call us straight away."

Police said genuine callers should carry some form of identification.

Trading standards officers are also warning shoppers about charity collections in the street.

Complaints have been received regarding collections which give the impression that donated items are going to good causes, when in fact the items are sold on for a profit. Trading Standards say these type of appeals give little detail about the good cause they are supposed to represent.

Bury Council's principal trading standards officer, Angela Lomax, said: "There are many legitimate and worthwhile collections asking for items at this time of year.

"However, there are some unscrupulous people collecting that have nothing to do with good causes. We are are advising people to ask a few questions about the collections. Genuine fund-raisers will be happy to give information and won't mind you checking them out."
