I READ with absolute disgust and bewilderment of David Blunkett's "generous" offer of taking 1,000 Iraqis and 200 Afghans into the UK when the camp at Sangatte closes later this month.

This question is one that the clear majority of the UK ask themselves each time they read articles like this: WHY BRITAIN? Why not send them to a larger country? Why? Because the UK Government is soft and they don't like "upsetting the neighbours"!

These refugees almost always get housing immediately (not forgetting we have homeless people in this country who see moves like this as a kick in the teeth).

The article also says that the refugees will have background security checks done on them -- how? Are they given a questionnaire asking "Are you a terrorist? Tick box 'YES' or 'NO'"!

Until these refugees move in next door to David Blunkett, and other MPs, it won't be seen as a problem or national security risk.
