KARAOKE man came into town and took Manchester by storm! writes Chris Sudlow.

The Elton John we all know and love was at his supreme best, aided by an hidden monitor which gave a visual prompt in case he ever became lost for words.

Hidden to many of the thousands packed into the MEN Arena, but not to those, like myself in the Rear View seats high above the stage.

A small point perhaps, but one that just emphasises the sheer professionalism of a master craftsman.

He opened up by admitting: "The last time I was in Manchester, it was the worst gig in my life."

There was no chance of a repeat as well-known favourites were mixed with songs from his new Songs From The West Coast album.

There was none of the ridiculous miming antics of the new so-called pop supergroups, who can hardly sing and can certainly not play any instruments.

Elton at the piano, five excellent musicians backing him, and hardly anything to spoil the two and a half hour show - apart from the couple on my right.

They wittered away incessantly, the girl meanwhile constantly sending text messages, and finally left early to the relief off all sitting in the vicinity.

Down on the stage Elton was oblivious to all this, as he lost himself in the power of his own sublime performance.
