SIR John Dankworth, one of the most accomplished and respected jazz musicians the United Kingdom has ever produced, describes Mark Nightingale as "The best jazz trombonist in the world".

No one fortunate enough to be at Derby Ward Labour Club on Friday night (December 6) would argue with that assessment.

Nightingale is a musician of awesome ability and his interpretations of some of the best-known standards in the jazz library brought a well-deserved ovation from an appreciative and knowledgeable audience.

He was given wonderful support by his backing trio led by Steve Moore (keyboards), Steve Berry (bass) and Dave Tyas (drums).

This was the third year Nightingale had appeared at the Derby Ward Jazz Jamborees, though on previous occasions he had played alongside the brilliant young tenor saxophonist Ben Castle. This time he flew solo!

Mark clearly appreciated the warmth of the reception he got from the crowd and said at the end of a terrific night's entertainment: "This place is unique. There's nowhere quite like in the UK". A nice remark from a modest and hugely talented man.
